Committee Seeks All Internal Documents Regarding Insurance Bill

POSTED: Thursday, February 14, 2008

A special Senate committee asked Allstate Insurance company executives to provide them more documents within two weeks in a letter mailed Thursday to the insurance giant's chairman.

Sen. Steven Geller, a Cooper City Democrat, and Sen. Jeff Atwater, a North Palm Beach Republican, who co-chair the Senate Select Committee on Property Insurance Accountability, requested copies of any internal correspondence having to do with the bill (HB 1A) Florida lawmakers passed a year ago in an attempt to reduce property insurance rates in Florida.

Allstate spokesman Adam Shores said the company was still reviewing the details of the request. Shores said Allstate has provided insurance regulators with more than 100,000 pages of documents already but would work with the legislative committee on the request.

Florida lawmakers have rejected Allstate requests to increase its rates in Florida, accusing the Illinois-based company of ignoring new legislation that was designed to reduce rates.
