MIAMI -- An American Airlines flight with 133 passengers and a crew of five made an emergency landing Friday at Miami International Airport after experiencing mechanical trouble.
Flight 862 was heading to Chicago from West Palm Beach airport at 1:35 p.m., but was diverted to Miami International Airport because of a problem with the landing gear.
When the plane took off from Palm Beach International Airport, pilots noticed there was a problem in the front of the plane with the nosegear, Local 10 reported.. They circled West Palm Beach for about an hour to determine what the problem was, but then were told by the Federal Aviation Administration to head south to Miami International Airport.
MIA's control tower had the plane fly by the tower as officials looked with binoculars at the extent of the problem. The Boeing
MD-80 aircraft then circled the airport to burn off the thousands of pounds of fuel it was carrying so that it could land at a safe weight.
At 3:35 p.m., the plane descended onto Runway 26L with the pilot landing on the back wheels of the plane, then gently lowering the front landing gear.
The plane landed safely with no complications.
Passengers on the flight were expected to depart for Chicago at 7 p.m. Friday.
