MIAMI -- A 42-year-old man who ran from security screeners Monday afternoon at Miami International Airport had a half-gram of cocaine in his luggage, according to a Miami-Dade police arrest report.
Faid Beydoun, a Lebanese man with no known address, is charged with cocaine possession, loitering or prowling and resisting arrest without violence.
Police said Beydoun was waiting in a security line, preparing to board an American Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles, when he ran from Transportation Security Administration screeners.
"We were doing a physical inspection of his bag and it was at that point he decided he was going to take off," said Mark Hatfield, director of security at MIA.
According to the police report, Beydoun ran from Concourse D to Concourse C, through the Dolphin Garage and then to Concourse A.
"He knocked several people out of the way," said Hatfield. "It was certainly not a gentle departure."
Police said Beydoun then took a drastic measure in an attempt to get away.
"Once he was outside of the airport, he jumped from the second-floor departure level to the first floor," said Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.
Falling about 30 feet, Beydoun broke his arm.
"Officers that were on the ground floor were able to apprehend him and take him into custody," said Zabaleta.
Beydoun was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained in the detention ward overnight.
Hatfield said Beydoun was carrying multiple identifications from multiple nationalities, "and that's part of what raised suspicion."
Police said Beydoun's plane ticket was a last-minute purchase. Two men waiting for another American Airlines flight to L.A. said they purchased Beydoun's ticket and hired him as a party promoter, intending to take their festivities across the country.
