SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. -- Florida Power and Light crews removed a disconnect switch at the Southwest Miami-Dade substation using a large crane Wednesday. The Flagami substation, at Flagler Street and 87th Avenue, is being blamed for Tuesday's massive power outage.
The ceramic-coated cylinder is about 12-feet-tall and 4 feet in diameter. The cylinder looked charred as the crane lifted it and lowered it to the ground where it was tagged and photographed, Local 10's Rad Berky reported.
Myco Villafana, an FPL spokesman, said it was still a mystery as to why the switch failed Tuesday at 1:08 p.m., triggering a series of events that included the shutdown of two nuclear reactors at Turkey Point.
Those two reactors remained shut down on Wednesday. Villafana said they would not be restarted until they are examined closely. Routine maintenance will also be done on the reactors while they are shut down, he said. Meanwhile, electricity is coming in from other plants around the state.
Villafana said the investigation of Tuesday's outage that affected 2 to 3 million customers throughout Florida is being expanded to include the possibility of "human error."
"We can't rule it out yet," said Villafana.
The state public service commission is also planning to conduct its own investigation.
