MIAMI -- A student protest of a fellow student's arrest turned into chaos at Miami Edison High School Friday with more than two dozen people in custody. The students face charges of disorderly conduct, battery on police officers and resisting arrest with violence.

Multiple police departments, including city of Miami police, Miami-Dade police and Miami School Board police were called to the school around 11 a.m., some in riot gear and some with K-9 units after school board police requested backup.

Local 10's Jacey Birch at the scene was told by students that it started after a staged protest against a fellow student's arrest at the school Thursday. The student had been arrested for assaulting the school's assistant principal, but students felt that the school official should have been reprimanded.

John Schuster, a spokesman for Miami-Dade Schools, confirmed that there was a student gathering Friday inside the courtyard. "School police were called in to step into the situation and handled it efficiently," he said.

Schuster said students were sent back to their classrooms around 12:30 p.m. and school began running on its regular schedule.

Miami Fire Rescue told Local 10 that five people were injured during the scuffle, including three police and two students. One of the students was a pregnant girl who was taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to officials.

Schuster would not confirm those numbers.

"We were called in as a back up to the School Board Police Department. Things got hectic. When we got here our job was crowd control. No police, no students were seriously hurt and no shots were fired," said Delrish Moss, of the Miami Police Department.

A spokesman from Miami School Board police said that students pelted police with milk bottles and books when they tried to disband the group and that is when they called for backup.

Sky 10 captured video of people being brought one by one out of the school in handcuffs.

"There were reports of several officers and as we were here several students told us they also had some injuries," said Ignatius "Iggy" Carroll of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Drivers were pulling over on the side of Interstate 95 to watch what was going on below, but police said that was causing a gridlock.

Many parents were planning a rally outside the school in opposition of Friday's police involvement.

The school is located at 6161 NW Fifth Court.
