FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Florida Department of Transportation Road Ranger was injured in a crash Tuesday morning while helping a motorist on Interstate 95.
The crash occurred at about 10:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95, just south of Davie Boulevard, involving two cars and a Road Ranger vehicle in the right shoulder.
Road Ranger Eduardo Robles is in serious, but stable condition, at Broward General Medical Center. He suffered a broken leg, along with cuts and bruises, according to Guy Francese, project manager for the FDOT Road Rangers. Robles was voted by FDOT as Road Ranger of the Year in January, and has been with FDOT since 2007, according to Francese.
Police said the driver that hit Robles was 52-year-old Joseph Bianca, of Deerfield Beach, who was ticketed for reckless driving, according to Sgt. Mark Wysocki, of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Bianca suffered minor injuries and was transported to Broward General. The stranded motorist being helped by Robles was Paul Ott, of Fort Lauderdale, who also suffered minor injuries.
Robles had pulled over to aid the stranded motorist whose car had a flat tire. Robles had emergency lights flashing, a flashing arrow, and emergency cones. He followed proper procedures, according to Wysocki.
Bianca was changing lanes from the HOV lane when he lost control and traveled across all lanes, hit a wall, and then hit the disabled car, and then the Road Ranger, said Wysocki.
"(Robles) walked back to the trunk to get the spare and was backing to the front with the spare. He said that suddenly everything went black and he remembers waking up and there was a crowd of people standing over him," said Francese.
Southbound traffic was backed up to Cypress Creek Road near Commercial Boulevard as a result of the crash.
