Reno Agrees To Debate, Stays Ahead In Poll

McBride, Reno To Face Off Just One Time

POSTED: 6:10 p.m. EDT July 15, 2002

Janet Reno on Monday agreed to debate her leading Democratic opponent, just as Channel 10 News was getting the latest poll numbers in the governor's race.

While speaking to the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches, Reno agreed to debate Bill McBride once. The club has hosted other big debates. McBride will get his one and only shot at debating Reno on Aug. 27.

Reno appears unstoppable in her quest to win the democratic nomination for governor, according to our latest Channel 10 poll, but if she ends up the nominee, she could still have a tough time beating the incumbent, Gov. Jeb Bush.

The poll was conducted for Channel 10 News by an independent survey firm. The sampling was drawn from the entire state of Florida, and included 700 adults, 596 of whom are registered voters.

When Democratic voters were asked, "Who would you vote for if the election were today?" 55 percent said Reno, 22 percent said Bill McBride, just 5 percent said Daryl Jones, and 15 percent said that they are still undecided.

But Bush holds a commanding lead over any of his Democratic opponents, according to the Channel 10 poll. When voters across the state were asked who they would vote for in a Bush-Reno race, 56 percent said Bush, 41 percent said Reno, and 3 percent are undecided.

If the ballot pitted Bush against McBride, the poll indicated that Bush would earn 55 percent, McBride would get 41 percent, and 5 percent are unsure.
