MIAMI -- In May, Channel 10 reported on the start of a local study looking into an all-natural remedy offering promise for people with problem skin.
The results of the study have been mixed.
Nicole Karman was in fifth grade when her skin started to change. "I guess, it's just, that's just the way it is it starts in 5th grade some people it clears up and some people it doesn't so you just have to deal with it," she said.
To 'deal with it,' Nicole's mom put her on Accutane, which cleared up her skin, until she stopped taking it. "The next step was Accutane for the second time and I was hesitant," Denise Karman said. Then she heard about a study into a natural treatment that could potentially work just like Accutane, without harmful side effects.
Three times a day, study participants take an all-natural supplement called Acneva.
Dr. Just Brahmatewari, a dermatologist says, "And the way they work is they're supposed to reduce the oil production in our own glands, the sebum or oil production that causes acne."
Three months into treatment Nicole's' skin is showing definite signs of improvement. Her mom said, "It's clearing up as well as the Accutane."
But not all the study subjects are pleased. Heather Jimenez, who Channel 10 interviewed in May, stopped taking Acneva because it upset her stomach.
Brahmatawari, "In some people I've found it really wasn't as effective and some people have complained of mild discomfort, indigestion basically."
Nicole's had no problems she says Acneva has helped improve her skin and her outlook. "I feel happier and more confident and I think it's a wonderful thing and more people should try it."
