SUNRISE, Fla. -- A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a 4-year-old girl as she was crossing the street Friday afternoon, police said.
The girl was hit after her mother and she exited a small bus in front of her home in the 6000 block of Northwest 16th Place.
Witnesses told police a silver Dodge Magnum with large chrome rims and a temporary license tag hit the girl and fled the scene.
Police said Benita Desir was stepping off a private bus holding onto the hand of her daughter, Veronica. She told police the girl ran a bit ahead of her mother. That is when the car came out of nowhere striking the girl.
Mario Langley, who lives in the area, ran to help Veronica and administered CPR until paramedics arrived, Local 10 reported.
She was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where she later died.
