Man Charged In Girl's Fatal Hit-And-Run

Police Say 18-Year-Old Driver Took Car To Get Repaired

POSTED: Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Police said they have arrested a man who struck and killed a 4-year-old girl with his car as she was crossing the street with her mother Friday afternoon.

An arrest warrant was executed Monday on Charles Sanford at his Sunrise home, where he was taken into custody. Police said Sanford, 18, confessed to the fatal hit-and-run.

A silver Dodge Magnum struck Veronica Ford moments after she stepped off a private bus in front of her home in the 1600 block of Northwest 60th Avenue. Her mother, Benita Desir, said she was holding her daughter's hand when the girl ran a bit ahead of her and was struck by the car.

Sanford's arrest came following a tip that a silver Dodge Magnum with front-end damage was being fixed at Mack's Towing in Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale police responded to Mack's Towing and contacted Sunrise police, who took possession of the car for forensic examination.

Based on the results and dozens of tips regarding the driver of the car, Sunrise police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Sanford on charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact, both felonies.

Sanford was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

An employee of Mack's Towing, Jermaine McLymont, was also arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and resisting arrest without violence. Police said he was in the process of fixing the car when it was seized.
