MIAMI -- A Miami police dog injured in the line of duty is recovering today.

Justice (pictured), a K-9 officer, was treated for cuts around his eye and ear. Police say he was bitten by a suspect he was chasing then beaten and stabbed around the head with a pipe.
Officers say they called for backup and arrested the suspect, James Smith, who is accused of breaking into an apartment.
"This human animal bit our police dog -- bit him on the ear several times. Not only did he bite him, but he took a metal pipe, a sharp metal pipe, and stabbed him under the eye. Now this guy just has to be nuts," Lt. Bill Schwartz said.
Justice is said to be recovering well from his injuries.
