MIAMI -- Authorities said 135 people have been arrested during raids across Florida of suspected marijuana grow houses.
Officials with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area said 150 houses with indoor marijuana operations were raided Wednesday, from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle.
Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta said 9,249 plants were seized, worth more than $41 million. In Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, HIDTA seized about 3,400 plants in 75 alleged grow houses and arrested 74 people.
Authorities said there's an epidemic of indoor marijuana cultivation in Florida run by organized crime groups.
"This happens in nice neighborhoods," Acosta said. "This happens in less than nice neighborhoods. This happens near schools. This happens near parks. And this could be happening right across from where your kids play or attend school, and that's something that we need to be very aware of."
HIDTA said families with children live in 40 percent of the alleged grow houses.
