South Beach Solar House County's First

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A South Beach home has become the first approved solar house in Miami-Dade County.
In November, the county approved the thin, flexible solar panels that
Green-Energy-Products.Com installed on the home at 3001 Bay Road on Thursday.
This particular system is the only one approved by the county because they are hurricane-proof. Whereas other larger panels would be more susceptible to a hurricane, these super-thin panels glue to the roof of a house and are nearly indestructible.
"This is the power of the future," said Julio Sepulveda with GEP.
Kenneth Fields told Local 10's Rob Schmitt he's "super-pumped" to see his energy bills decrease.
Fields said his bills increased by about $200 a month in the past year. He said the panels will be able to handle 80 to 90 percent of his energy needs on average, leaving his Florida Power & Light bills at about $20 a month.
"Energy's not getting any cheaper," Fields said.
From start to finish, the project is costing Fields $50,000. He said the system will pay for itself in eight years.
The panels should last about 20 years, according to GEP, which installed the entire system at Fields' home in less than two weeks.
Fields' system will produce more than 1,400 kilowatts per day, using 36 rooftop solar panels that cost about $750 each.
