MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- A power surge is likely to blame for a communications problem at the Florida Highway Patrol's Troop E headquarters in Miami-Dade County today.

FHP representatives say they lost power to their building at 1011 N.W. 111 Ave. around 5:45 a.m. and a backup generator did not work. Power has since been restored, but dispatchers are still working out of a mobile command center (pictured) because the air conditioning in the radio room is not functional.
"The units actually out on the road were never affected," said Lt. Julio Pajon. "We do have portable handheld radios that our dispatchers were using to dispatch units to calls."
Miami-Dade County police are also relaying any FHP-related 911 calls over the radio. Members of the public trying to reach the Florida Highway Patrol by dialing their *FHP number will not be able to get through at this time.
"We have electricians in the building ... making sure that all the wiring is OK and when they give us the go ahead to go back inside, we'll go back inside and hopefully it will be business as usual," Pajon said. "It was a serious situation. It could've been worse, but everything turned out OK."
Officials hope that everything will be back to normal by early afternoon.
