PALMETTO BAY, Fla. -- Miami-Dade police are searching for the person or persons responsible for vandalizing Coral Reef Park overnight.
At about 7 a.m. Tuesday, a park employee discovered messages and symbols of hate spray-painted across two park buildings.
There were swastikas and hateful words directed at Jews, blacks, Mexicans and Arabs. There were also drawings of nooses and a drawing of a stick figure hanging from a noose.
Police were called to investigate and park crews quickly began painting over the graffiti.
“We just wanted to make sure that the ugliness was taken care of as quickly as possible,” said Palmetto Bay spokesman Bill Kress.
Kress said the vandalism is being investigated as a hate crime.
"It was very disturbing, to say the least," said Kress.
Tuesday was the second day of summer camp at Coral Reef Park. The park closes at sunset, but Palmetto Bay officials are now considering having security at the park during overnight hours.
