Police Investigate Rape On South Beach

UPDATED: 6:49 pm EDT June 24, 2008

Detectives are investigating a rape on South Beach early Tuesday morning, according to Miami Beach police.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. along a small alleyway between two buildings called The Webster Temporary, police said.

The building's management didn't want to discuss the rape with Local 10, but Miami Beach police detectives were combing the neighborhood looking for clues and possibly surveillance video, since there are many cameras mounted along the busy street.

"The detectives are going to take that into consideration and whatever surveillance cameras they do find or surveillance tapes, they will follow up on it," police spokesman Juan Sanchez said.

According to the incident report, the woman and a male friend were having drinks at Mango's on Ocean Drive when they decided to split up. The victim went to Fat Tuesday's while the friend returned to his car parked at a public garage.

After the woman left Fat Tuesday's to meet her friend, she was walking along Ninth Street toward Collins Avenue when her attacker approached and tried to engage in a conversation with her, the report said.

Police wouldn't release details on how the woman ended up in the alleyway.

"It's busy and, you know what, I always feel safe in this neighborhood because it is well lit," said Kimberly Phillips. "There are people driving. There are people walking. I walk to and from work and I feel safe at that time."

The victim was taken to a rape treatment center. Police said her attacker was a man in his 20s, weighing about 5 feet 6 inches tall with dark, short bushy hair.

"You would think we would be safe with all the technology and everything that's progressed," said Esperanza Lopez, who parked nearby. "To see that it's still going on and we still have to take precautions, I mean -- and this is South Beach. This is a tourist section. So it just makes us more fearful, especially being young ladies."

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
