Water Tests Positive For Fecal Matter
POSTED: Thursday, June 26, 2008
MIAMI -- A swimming advisory was issued Wednesday after samples of water collected at a dozen beaches in Miami-Dade County tested positive for fecal matter, the county's health department said.
Health officials advise against swimming at the following beaches: Golden Beach; Sunny Isles Beach; Oleta River State Park's swimming area; Haulover Beach; the beach near 93rd Street in Surfside; the beaches near 74th Street, 53rd Street and 21st Street; South Pointe Park; Hobie/Dog Beach; Crandon Park beach; and Matheson Hammock Park beach.
Samples of the water in those areas did not meet the criteria for bacteria, as recommended by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The water samples are being analyzed for fecal bacteria that could cause illness.
An environmental administrator for the Miami-Dade County Health Department said swimmers who ignore the warnings might be at a greater risk of gastrointestinal illness and ear and eye infections.
