Residents On Edge After Rape, Robbery In Past Week
Riverwalk Crime Concerns Residents

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Residents in one condominium near Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk are warning others to stay alert after two criminal incidents in the past week.
Bobby Rubenzahl, a resident of The Symphony, said she and others living on their end of the Riverwalk "are easy pickings right now." She said criminals are targeting residents, but the victims aren't reporting the crimes.
Last Wednesday night, a couple was walking along the water's edge near the Broward Center for the Performing Arts when, according to police reports, two men -- one of whom was armed with a silver revolver -- jumped out of the bushes, pressed the gun to the man's head and demanded their money. The crooks then forced the victims to the ground and took off.
Residents said that was followed by an incident in which a woman was pulled into the bushes by three men and raped Saturday night. They said a lack of lighting and security makes them easy targets.
"(People from outside the area) see the nightlife, they see the people living over here with money and they see an opportunity to take advantage of this," said Joe Jackson, president of the condo association.
Jackson said the association has hired an armed security guard to patrol the area.
Fort Lauderdale police said they would do the same if they knew about a problem. Records show just three robberies in the area in the past year and a half.
That's because several crimes have gone unreported, including Saturday's rape and another in April, when the woman fought off her attacker.
"If we don't know about it, it doesn't exist," Sgt. Frank Sousa said. "We want the citizens to call us. It's important for them to reach out to us and let us know when an event happens."
