MARATHON, Florida Keys -- An alleged puppy mill was found in a warehouse right behind the Florida Key Marathon Airport last weekend.
A total of 46 dogs were found locked up inside the building. Many of them filled the little rooms inside the warehouse.
"The dogs were just puppy machines. No toys, no windows," said Linda Gottwaldof of Marathon's Animal Shelter.
Gottwaldof said one walk-in closet had 16 puppies, with only one cereal bowl full of water. She said the owners were breeding "golden doodle" puppies, a mix of a poodle and a golden retriever.
It is believed the puppies were sold online for $1,500 each.
Many of the dogs were malnourished and unkempt. Some of the poodles had to be completely shaved because their hair was so matted.
The owners of the warehouse were not available for comment. But animal control officers issued them a citation for substandard conditions. In addition, the owners could face additional criminal charges from the Monroe County Sheriff's office.
Most of the puppies have been adopted, but there are still a number of adult dogs that need homes.
If you are interested in adopting, contact the Marathon Shelter at 305-743-3253.
