BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- As of Wednesday morning, E85 fuel is now available in Broward County.
To celebrate the fuel's debut, the UGAS station at 999 West Hallandale Beach Boulevard began selling the 85 percent Ethanol, 15 percent gasoline mixture at $1.85 per gallon from 7 to 9 a.m.
The promotion was so attractive to Capucine Leconte, she put E85 in her Volkswagon Jetta. Only FlexFuel vehicles should use E85. Although there are millions of these vehicles on the road, the Jetta is not one of them. Filling up a non-compatible vehicle with E85 could damage the engine.
At prices less than $2 per gallon, it was a risk Leconte was willing to take.
“They say just don’t let the engine light come on. But mine is already on. So, what the hell,” she told Local 10's Kellie Butler.
“She was doing something we don’t recommend,” said Robert White of the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council.
On Wednesday, Enterprise Rent-a-Car also designated one of its Broward county locations as the first E85/Flexfuel rental branch in South Florida. Twenty-five percent of the vehicles at the branch will be FlexFuel vehicles.
Ethanol is a renewable energy source and it burns less fossil fuels.
“An important component of Enterprise’s environmental stewardship program is to embrace new, clean fuels and automotive technologies,” said Alan Levine, Vice President of Enterprise in South Florida.
After Wednesday morning's promotion, E85 was priced at $3.79 a gallon, regular unleaded was $4.05.
Although E85 costs less, the fuel economy is not as good as gas.
