Trial Gets Under Way In Marlins Stadium Lawsuit

POSTED: Thursday, July 10, 2008
UPDATED: 1:42 pm EDT July 10, 2008

The trial over a multibillion-dollar lawsuit challenging the financing of the proposed Florida Marlins stadium and other Miami projects is underway.

Businessman Norman Braman alleges the Mega-plan is illegal because it uses money intended for developing poor communities to benefit a private sports team.

The Marlins hope to have their new $515 million stadium completed in time for the 2011 season. It will be built at the site of the old Orange Bowl.

The $3 billion plan also includes money for a Port of Miami truck tunnel, a new park and a downtown streetcar system.

The trial is scheduled to begin Thursday afternoon and is expected to last about two weeks.
