Miami Beach Police Arrest Serial Rape Suspect

A man police said is responsible for a series of rapes on Miami Beach is behind bars, after Miami Beach police caught him just moments after he allegedly tried to assault a woman Wednesday.

Miami Beach Police said Arturo Ortiz Soto, 29, confessed to four other attacks dating back to 2006. All the attacks happened on Miami Beach.

According to Miami Beach Police, early Wednesday morning a woman was walking from her home when Ortiz-Soto allegedly grabbed and dragged her to an alley at Collins Court and 14th Street. That's when, according to investigators, he started to punch her violently.

A homeless man saw what was happening and screamed “Rape!” Ortiz-Soto fled on foot.

Another witness saw Ortiz-Soto jump into a tax cab. He wrote down the cab number and flagged down police.

Police found Ortiz-Soto in the cab and arrested him.

According to police, Ortiz-Soto worked as a sushi chef in Miami-Beach. In 2006, he allegedly lured a woman into an alley on Ocean Court and raped her. In 2007, he allegedly tried to rape two women -- one behind a CVS, the other near the beach at 15th Street and Ocean Drive.

His most recent alleged attempt was in June, when police believe he raped a woman in a small alleyway between two buildings at 900 Ocean Drive.

Police officer Debra Doty said this should send a clear message. She told Local 10, “We will not accept this type of behavior. Our streets are safe and we will protect our citizens.”

Investigators believe there are more victims. They ask anyone with any information to come forward.
