MIAMI -- Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Jeri Beth Cohen insists she'll get to a verdict her way, and on her schedule.
"Let me tell you something. I will not be pressured," Cohen said in court Monday evening, as testimony continued over the $30 billion "mega plan" that would build a new retractable roof stadium for the Florida Marlins.
Testifying for Miami-Dade County, economist Tony Villamil presented an encouraging forecast for attendance at the new stadium slated to be built at the site of the former Orange Bowl in Little Havana.
"We have a stadium in a central location, well designed and with air conditioning," said Villamil.
Under questioning from Judge Cohen, Villamil conceded he could not point to any specific economic studies to demonstrate a new stadium would attract crowds to Marlins games or the surrounding neighborhood.
The Marlins, despite a winning record, have the worst attendance record in the major leagues.
Miami business owner Norman Braman sued over the Marlins deal, saying the public should have had a vote on the massive public program that would build the stadium, dig a tunnel at the Port of Miami and revitalize Bicentennial Park.
The case resumes Tuesday morning.
