COOPER CITY, Fla. -- A memorial service was held Wednesday for a Broward Sheriff's Office K-9 shot and killed in the line of duty.
Oozi, a 7½-year-old Belgian Malinois, was fatally shot Thursday while pursuing a suspect who led dozens of law enforcement officials on a two-county chase. The chase ended when 27-year-old Delvin Lewis drove to the parking lot of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, where Oozi was caught in the crossfire.
About 150 K-9 units from law enforcement agencies across the state came to Cooper City High School to pay their respects.
Oozi, who was trained in narcotics, was assigned to the Cooper City district.
Oozi and his handler , Deputy Jerry Wengert, were named employees of the month in May for their apprehension of three burglary suspects who tried to run them over. Oozi helped with hundreds of criminal apprehensions throughout his career and more than 35 in 2008.
"Last Thursday morning, Oozi was doing exactly what he was trained to do -- apprehending a dangerous suspect," Sheriff Al Lamberti said.
Wengert spoke of Oozi as being not just a partner, but also the family pet to his two young daughters, both of whom read from a sheet of paper and expressed their love for Oozi.
Said Wengert in closing: "Oozi, I miss you. I love you. I'm sorry. Thank you."
