MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Teenagers were on the lookout for distracted drivers in southwest Miami-Dade County on Monday.
The road watch was part of an initiative by Allstate to teach teens about the dangers of not paying attention while being behind the wheel of an automobile.
According to a study conducted by the insurance company, vehicular crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens in South Florida.
"The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers," company spokesman Nick Halliwell said. "And July is the deadliest month for Miami teen drivers."
When a distraction was spotted, it was relayed to a team member who would mark a point for the appropriate team at the tally board.
Ignacio Bordolla, who participated in Monday's event, said he saw a lot of people talking or sending text messages on their cell phones and putting on makeup, not aware of what they were doing.
Drivers using their cell phones seemed to be the biggest distraction, but some caught the teens by surprise.
"They had three people that are trying to drive while writing at the same time, so I can certainly see how that would be very dangerous," Halliwell said.
