MIAMI -- A South Florida family is searching for answers after their son disappeared off the coast of South Africa.
Seraphin Bernard Jr. was apparently swimming near a shipwreck off the coast of South Africa when he disappeared in an area of the water known for its dangerous rip currents.
Bernard, 22, was in South Africa as a team leader on a World Learning trip when he disappeared July 17.
His family said they don't believe he would have been in the water because Bernard couldn't swim.
"For someone to say that he jumped in the water, knowing that he can't swim and with no life jacket, that doesn't seem reasonable to me," brother Tedd Bernard said. "In one of the articles, they said he was 200 yards away. That's two football fields."
The Bernard family said they have hope he is still alive, but South African authorities said they spotted sharks during their search and doubt he will be found.
"There's just so many things that just didn't make sense, so I kind of want to just sort of get the reality of what happened over there," Tedd Bernard said.
