MIAMI -- A newly-hired high school basketball coach, and former NBA star, was arrested and charged with a sex crime on a minor Wednesday.
One week before school starts at Gulliver Preparatory School in Pinecrest, Vincent Askew, 42, was taken to the Miami-Dade County jail accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl he tried to recruit.
The teenager was not a student at the school.
Miami-Dade police told Local 10, "The subject met the victim under the pretense that he was a basketball coach for the girl's team at Gulliver school and was going to try to make her a part of that team."
Askew, a retired NBA player, was hired by the school in May.
Police said the victim told them the relationship was consensual and had been going on for the last three months.
Askew was being held on $22,000 bail, but has since bonded out of jail.
He could not be reached for comment at the hotel room listed as his local address.
