MIAMI -- A 70-year-old grandmother was arrested Wednesday after police said she tried to buy marijuana and cocaine from a man on the street.
Grandmother Says She Bought Pot For Sick SonPaula Carrido was observed buying drugs near Southwest Eighth Avenue and Seventh Street, police said. The officer who stopped her found a bag of marijuana and a bag of cocaine in her possession, police said.
Carrido on Thursday appeared before a judge who scolded her for the alleged purchase.
"Don't you think you'd be embarrased to have your grandchildren know that you're in jail for buying drugs?" the judge said.
Carrido was released on bond.
Local 10's Constance Jones spoke with Carrido after she was released. Carrido told Local 10 she has never done any drugs in her life and admitted to buying marijuana to help her son, who has spent years suffering from cancer, cope with the pain.
"As a mother I made a mistake," Carrido said. "I wanted to tell the judge to please forgive me."
Carrido also said the judge acted honestly but offender her. She left court crying.
