MIAMI -- Simmering tensions between Miami-Dade’s school superintendent and some school board members blew up into a shouting match at a workshop meant to decide on the last cuts to the district budget.
Board member Marta Perez, a longtime critic of Superintendent Rudy Crew, was angered that more job cuts were proposed to meet a projected $68 million state funding shortfall.
“The superintendent has not brought us back what we have asked for,” she said.
Crew tried to answer, but Perez was not finished.
“No, you may not; I have the floor,” she answered.
“Do not talk to me like a dog! Do not get in that habit! Ever in your life!” Crew bellowed back, sparking a shouting match that the board chair tried to end.
“I have the floor! I have the floor! This is outrageous!” Perez yelled.
Thursday’s workshop was the last such meeting scheduled to hammer out a budget due to the state in two weeks. The superintendent suggested cutting $68 million more to meet a projected decline in state revenue. The board did not vote on any of the suggested cuts.
Despite the acrimony, Board Chair Agustin Barrera said he is confident the board will vote on a balanced $5.5 billion budget when it meets Sept. 10th.
