FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Broward couple, who gave their newborn daughter a deadly dose of vodka, was sentenced on Wednesday in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom.
Mackenson Dantus and Mardala Deriva were sentenced to five years probation.
The judge also ordered them to speak to Haitian groups about the dangers of self-medication.
Dantus and Deriva were arrested after the death of their 3-month old daughter in 2004.
The medical examiner found her blood alcohol level to be six times the legal limit.
The couple was first charged with manslaughter, but the jury only convicted them on a lesser charge of child abuse.
