MIAMI -- Police in Miami have arrested the man they said was responsible for a hit-and-run accident that killed a father of four.
The arrest came a few hours after the victim's family pleaded for help.
Police said the suspect, Carlos Rodriguez, made up an elaborate story, claiming he had been carjacked. But according to detectives, his version of what happened simply didn't add up.
"I just know my soulmate is gone," said Laquardia Jackson, the victim's husband.
On Saturday night, 29-year-old Kamar Jackson kissed his wife goodbye and said he'd be right back. A few blocks from their home, his car was crushed by a speeding SUV that ran a stop sign at Northwest First Court and 20th Street. The impact killed Jackson.
Fifteen blocks away, Miami police found the hit-and run-driver's SUV. The vehicle's front end was crushed, tires shredded and windshield shattered. Police searched the area but found no sign of the driver.
On Sunday afternoon, Jackson's wife and mother made a public appeal, asking him to give himself up.
That's when police said Rodriguez came forward and told them he had been carjacked and his SUV had been stolen. He said the gash on his forehead was caused not by the crash, but during a beating by the carjackers.
While he was being questioned, however, he confessed he'd been out at a strip club and was drunk when he got behind the wheel, police said.
