FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Police in Fort Lauderdale tracked down a stolen unmarked police vehicle Monday morning, but they have not found a semiautomatic assault rifle that was inside.
The police vehicle, which was assigned to a member of the SWAT team, was stolen from the officer's house.
Coral Springs police recovered the car and everything inside except for a high-powered semiautomatic assault rifle called an AR-15. Because of the gun's lethal power, police are concerned and are asking the public for help in solving the crime.
"It's an assault rifle. It's a high-powered firearm, obviously," said Sgt. Frank Sousa of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. "Why they chose that particular firearm -- like I said, this individual's a member of our SWAT team. There's several firearms in the vehicle, however, that the only one that was taken."
Police declined to give any specifics as to the make, model or color of the stolen vehicle.
