MIAMI -- A baby sitter accused of taking part in an armed home invasion appeared in bond court on Monday morning.
Janette Martinez, 22, and her boyfriend, Fernando Luis Gaston, are accused of entering a Wilton Manors home and pistol-whipping the resident on Saturday night.
Martinez held back tears as she heard the charges against her in a Miami court. She got even more upset when she found out she was on the TV news Monday morning after being arrested in Homestead over the weekend.
Not much was accomplished during the hearing, and Martinez is expected to appear in court again on Monday afternoon.
Martinez and Gaston are accused of going into Brittni Baines' house on Saturday night. Martinez sometimes baby-sat Baines' 7-year-old son, Tavian.
"They laid him next to me and covered us up with a blanket and said he'll be fine, but tomorrow I won't be able to say what happened," Baines said.
Baines said she was bound and pistol-whipped on the head and left for dead.
"They taped my mouth, taped my arms together, taped my legs together, and I was just telling them, 'You can take whatever you want, just don't touch my kid,'" Baines said.
Tavian was asleep when the ordeal began, but he quickly became a victim.
"The guy was taping me up and he said, 'Don't scream,'" Tavian said.
The mother and son were supposed to move to Texas on Sunday morning. Baines said she thinks the duo were looking for cash.
Lucky for Baines, Tavian got loose after the two left the house.
"He pulled up my tape enough to get down to where it was only (at my shoulders)," Baines said.
Baines picked up her son and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
Gaston and Martinez each face charges of armed home invasion, aggravated battery and kidnapping.
Although Gaston and Martinez are being held in Miami-Dade County, they are expected to be extradited to Broward County because the alleged crime happened in Wilton Manors. Gaston, too, is expected to appear in bond court on Monday afternoon.
