Bad Report Card Almost Cost Boy’s Family Their Home

HIALEAH, Fla. -- The owners of a Hialeah mobile home park said a 9-year-old boy and his family could not move in because of a grade on that boy’s report card.
The owners said they are trying to keep troublemakers out, but fair-housing attorneys said what they did is illegal.
Alessandro Molina said he is not a troublemaker. Molina and his father came from Cuba two years ago and had been living with a relative in another trailer in the park. But the rules said anyone living there needs management approval. That’s when Alex Teutelo decided he and his son would go through the process.
The owners of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod wanted a copy of Alessandro’s report card, and then an updated one every quarter. The family’s application was denied because Alessandro got an “F” in conduct in his science class. Alessandro told Local 10, “I feel sad because I don’t want to live in the street.”
Kennya Richardson is an employee with the nonprofit organization H.O.P.E. which deals with fair housing issues. She said, “I’m mortified; no child should have the pressure of determining whether or not his family has a shelter, a home. This isn’t a privilege; they are looking for housing.”
Attorney Matthew Dietz said that since the mobile home park is not a 55-and-older community, it cannot have different rules for kids. “This is against the federal Fair Housing Act, which protects families with children. I have never seen a case like this. This is just mean-spirited, especially at a place named after a nursery rhyme. You wouldn’t expect them to discriminate against children.”
State records show the property is owned and operated by Murray Ginsburg and his son Andrew Ginsburg. Andrew told Local 10 by phone that this is not the first family that has been denied. Ginsburg did not want to comment, but Teutelo said Ginsburg has had a change of heart and that he and his son are now allowed to live there.
