MIAMI -- A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who killed and mutilated an American crocodile on the campus of the University of Miami on Wednesday.
The crocodile's body, which was missing its head and tail, was discovered near an on-campus canal. The head and tail have not been found.
An official with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said investigators found a chum bag in the canal. They believe the killer used it to lure the crocodile to shore.
CompUSA is offering a reward of $5,000 for a tip leading to an arrest.
American crocodiles are an endangered species in Florida and a threatened species elsewhere in the U.S. The person who killed the crocodile could face a third-degree felony charge. If convicted, he or she could go to prison for five years or pay a $5,000 fine.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477). Tipsters can remain anonymous.
