A police officer whose dog died in his police car in August will not face charges, the Broward County State Attorney's Office said Monday.

Hieke, a dog that worked in drug detection for the Coral Springs Police Department, was found dead in an unmarked police car on Aug. 27.

Investigators said the car was off, and the dog died because of the heat.

The state attorney's office said it would not file criminal charges.

An internal investigation by the Coral Springs Police Department continues.
