American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said Flight 908 was making a descent into the airport before 7 a.m. when it hit severe turbulence at 30,000 feet.

The Boeing 737's flight from Buenos Aires had been calm until about 30 minutes before its scheduled landing in Miami. The pilot had instructed the passengers and crew that it was a safe time to move around the cabin.

Then, the plane hit an air packet, tossing passengers into walls and the overhead luggage compartment.

"It jumped. It went up and down and up and down," said passenger Ana Quiros.

Quiros said she was not injured because she was wearing her seat belt when the turbulence began.

Passenger Yamilet Mejia told Local 10 that the turbulence was very strong, more so than regular turbulence. She was waiting in line for the restroom when it hit. She was thrown into the wall and to the floor, fracturing her wrist, injuring her back and knee.

When the plane landed safely, the passengers were told to stay seated as it pulled up to a gate so paramedics could help those who were injured.

Two flight attendants and four passengers, including Mejia, were taken to area hospitals with back and neck injuries. From Sky 10, one passenger could be seen on a stretcher.

The injuries were not life-threatening, Local 10's Elena Echarri reported.
