Is It Really Florida Grouper? YouTube Video: Murky Mekong FishThe following restaurants have recently been cited for allegedly mislabeling ingredients, Local 10's Jeff Weinsier reported.
Hunan Wok II, 382 East Dania Beach Blvd., Dania -- Observed “NO MSG” sign on menu and observed MSG in use. Wreck, 58835 Overseas Highway, Marathon -- Grouper advertised on the menu three times, but restaurant had no grouper on hand or in storage. Invoices reviewed did show grouper was never purchased. Dillions Public House, 91200 Overseas Highway, Tavernier -- Selling striped pangus filets for grouper. Other fish in walk-in cooler and freezer were yellow fin tuna and mahi-mahi. Lester’s Diner, 250 S.W. 24th Street, Fort Lauderdale -- Imitation crab used as “crab meat” on the menu. Pho Hoa II Restaurant, 5345 N State Road 7, Tamarac -- Imitation crab meat advertised as crab meat. Asian Grill, 7462 Royal Palm Blvd., Margate -- Crab rangoon misrepresented on menu, made with entirely imitation crab meat. Thai Sushi Express, 1630 S.E. 3rd Court, Deerfield Beach -- Snapper on menu, but no snapper in restaurant. Operator stated that the restaurant uses tilapia in place of snapper because it the same kind of fish. Hong Kong Chinese, 2422 North State Road 7, Margate -- Imitation crab meat is sole ingredient for crab rangoon, misrepresentation on the menu. Coconut Creek Grille and Tap House, 5331 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek -- “Pangasius" on invoice from Sysco being sold as grouper on the menu. Red Pepper, 10309 Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs -- 3 items, crab rangoon, seafood delight and seafood with pan fried noodles being represented on the menu as being made with crab, but was imitation. Caribe Chef Restaurant, 3953 N.W. 7th Street, Miami -- Grouper on menu, found only boxes of swai fish in freezer. Spoke to manager, says when someone orders grouper he gives them swai. Siam Lotus Room, 6388 South Dixie Highway, Miami -- Grouper on menu. No grouper on premises. Operator unaware that swai was a different fish. Miami Police Dept Café, 400 N.W. 2nd Avenue, Miami -- Identity of food misrepresented. The restaurant is serving panga, stating that it is grouper. Confirmed by the manger and frontline employee. F&M Cafeteria, 12085 West Okeechobee Rd., Hialeah Gardens -- Selling basa for grouper. Blue Sky Food by the Pound, 3320 West 84th Street, Hialeah -- Swai for grouperEmily Restaurant #2, 16 west Flagler Street, Miami -- Grouper on the menu. No grouper on site. Tilapia is the only fish on the invoice, but not on the menu.
