NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- The mayor of North Miami asked the Miami-Dade County courts to create a mortgage foreclosure diversion program to help people stay in their homes.
Mayor Kevin Burns owes more than $279,000 on the three-bedroom home he shares with his partner, who's a stay-at-home-dad to their 7-year-old daughter.
If the money isn't paid, the home goes up for public sale in January.
Burns sponsored a City Council resolution last week asking the courts for the diversion program for people in the early stages of foreclosure.
Burns said the mayor's job pays $48,000 a year and he's gone through his savings after giving up a real estate business to focus on his mayoral duties.
