CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Police have a mystery on their hands after a Coral Springs man turns up dead two days after he disappeared.
Adam Gerber, 33, was last seen at the Sears Auto Center at the Broward Mall in Plantation on Nov. 4.
Two days later, a water management worker found Gerber's body near a levee at the 40-mile marker of Okeechobee Road.
What happened in the days between remains a mystery.
Christian Santiago, one of Gerber's two roommates at their Coral Springs apartment, told Local 10's Janine Stanwood the last time he saw Gerber was Monday. They spoke that night.
"I asked him to do me a favor and he got me some groceries because he was working at Wal-Mart. So he left the groceries here," Santiago said.
It was the last time Santiago would hear from his roommate.
Detectives believe that after Gerber's trip to Sears the next day, he ate a Spanish-type meal, was killed and dumped in western Broward County.
At 33, Gerber reportedly had the mental capacity of a teenager.
"Basically he thinks like a 15-year-old. So, we're talking about somebody who was fully functioning but maybe gullible, maybe easy to take advantage of," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion.
"Super naïve, extremely naïve. You're talking about a kid," Santiago said.
Another neighbor said he was "too willing to help."
Neighbors at Gerber's Coral Springs apartment complex said he was a longtime Publix employee. But they helped him find a new job as an overnight clerk at the North Lauderdale Wal-Mart on McNab Road. They said he seemed happy.
Gerber's apparent murder is unsolved. His car, a silver, 1998 Lexus 300 with Wisconsin plates 768MKH, can't be located. Detectives don't know how he died, but they said Gerber's body is badly decomposed from being outside.
"It's really sad that something like that would happen to someone who didn't really seem to deserve it," said Santiago.
Anyone with information about is asked to call the Broward Sheriff's Office, or Crimestoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
