POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A thief snatched an 80-year-old woman's purse and then tried to buy gift cards using a stolen credit card, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Police said that on Oct. 29 at about 10:30 a.m., the 80-year-old woman was on her way home after getting a manicure when a woman stole her purse. The victim fell down during the struggle and injured her hips, BSO said. The thief escaped in a car, police said.
About 15 minutes later, someone tried to use one of the victim's credit cards at a Wal-Mart in the 2300 block of West Atlantic Boulevard in order to buy gift cards worth $300. Although the purchase went through, BSO said, the woman trying to use the credit card left when the cashier asked her for ID.
A surveillance video in the Wal-Mart parking lot showed the woman getting out of a compact, white car, possibly a Honda, and going into the store.
BSO said the woman is in her 30s and was wearing a gray coat or sweater.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
