MIAMI -- U.S. Coast Guard crews searched Monday for a boat with 40 migrants that was reported missing over the weekend.
Officials said a woman told the Coast Guard on Saturday that her boyfriend had left the Dominican Republic on Wednesday aboard a makeshift wooden boat with about 40 other people aboard, bound for Puerto Rico. The woman said the migrants never arrived in Puerto Rico.
The Coast Guard began searching for the boat in the Mona Passage, which is the strait between Hispaniola, where the Dominican Republic is located, and Puerto Rico.
Searchers from the Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are sweeping the area by helicopter in the hope of finding the migrants.
