DAVIE, Fla. -- Students at a Davie high school distributed Thanksgiving meals and groceries Tuesday to those in need as part of the annual Harvest Drive.
Canned foods, eggs, turkeys, pies and milk lined the stage of Western High School's auditorium Tuesday as students got ready to distribute their donations.
Mother of five Angeline Nazien went to the school to get a Thanksgiving spread and to shop for Christmas gifts for her children. She told Local 10's Jennifer Herrera that she was shocked when she walked into the building and saw everything that had been donated.
Renee Herman, the founder of the Harvest Drive, said it started small but has grown in the past 16 years.
"My sons and I would hand out a few cans to those families in need. Then we started to change it up," Herman said.
The changes went a long way. On Tuesday, 200 families picked up Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings and a week's worth of groceries. Then, they had 20 minutes to shop for whatever they wanted.
"They have clothes, toys, books and educational toys, which is always a plus," Nazien said.
After they eat their Thanksgiving dinners and play with their toys, Nazien said her children will still have something left over.
"It shows them if you can be able to receive, one day they'll be able to give back, also," Nazien said.
