A Monroe County sheriff's deputy died Wednesday afternoon when his car collided with a tractor-trailer on U.S. 1, police said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened at about 12:20 p.m. at the 62 mile marker. The tractor-trailer and an unmarked silver Dodge patrol car were involved.

Police said the officer died at the scene. Authorities identified the deputy who died as 38-year-old Nick Pham.

Sheriff's office officials said traffic in the area was congested in both directions on Wednesday afternoon as a result of the investigation.

Pham had worked for the sheriff's office since September 2004. His wife, Jackey, and his children live in Homestead, according to the sheriff's office.
