Christmas Tree Fire Guts Hialeah Home

Officials said a faulty light cable on a Christmas tree might be to blame for an overnight fire in Hialeah.

The blaze started in the living room of a house in the 200 block of West 50th Street. Homeowner Roberto Gonzalez told Local 10 that he and his wife smelled smoke at about 1:30 a.m. and woke up their children.

The couple and their 4- and 5-year-old children escaped safely.

"Thank God we all got out OK," Gonzalez said.

Hialeah fire officials said they do not know for sure that the light cable sparked the blaze, but the fire did originate in the area of the Christmas tree. Gonzalez said a firefighter told him the light cord was probably bad.

Almost everything in the house was destroyed. Gonzalez said several gifts for the children that were under the tree went up in flames.

Gonzalez said the house was insured, and he and his family are now staying with relatives.

A family of three who lives in an apartment attached to the house also escaped the fire unharmed, although smoke damaged their home. The two adults and child are staying with relatives, as well.

Hialeah fire officials said the blaze serves as a reminder about the dangers of Christmas decorations. They said it is best to turn off the Christmas tree lights and unplug them before going to bed.
