Jury Finds In Favor Of Hospital In Amputation Suit

A jury found in favor of a hospital in a lawsuit filed by a woman who lost her arms and legs after going to a hospital for treatment for kidney stones.

Lisa Strong, a 44-year-old mother of two, said she sued her doctors and the South Broward Hospital District after going into Memorial Hospital West in 2004 with a kidney stone and, because of complications, eventually losing all four limbs.

“What they did was horrible. I don’t know how I am going to live the rest of my life," Strong said Monday.

A jury of six decided Monday in favor of the defendants on all counts. The decision shocked Strong.

“Every step of the way they did something wrong, and they all pointed fingers at each other, and that’s probably why I lost because the jury couldn’t figure out what was what," Strong said.

Defense attorney Jim Nosich, who represented one of the doctors in the lawsuit, said he believes another doctor who was not named in the suit could be the reason for the jury's decision.

"I think the jury probably laid it all on her," Nosich said.

"You never know until the jury comes back what they decided. I think it surprised a lot of people, but they heard the evidence and made a decision," said Jay Chimpoulis, who represented another doctor sued in the case.

Although it was a multimillion-dollar victory, to many it seemed a hollow one.

"We are pleased with the verdict, but the South Broward really makes no comment other than to wish Mrs. Strong and her family the best of luck in the future," said Tom Aubin, an attorney for the South Broward Hospital District.

Strong and her attorneys are considering an appeal because her biggest concern is how she will cope with her condition in the future.

“I can’t even take care of myself or my children now," Strong said. "What am I going to do later? Prosthetics are expensive. Insurance won’t give them out. Pretty soon there won’t be any Medicare or Social Security. What am I going to do when I am older?”

Representatives of the hospital expressed sympathy for Strong and her condition, but they emphatically stated that they did their best to give her quality care and that they did not do anything wrong.
