One adult’s voice can be very powerful in the life of a child living in foster care. According to Voices For Children Foundation, that voice can silence a storm of adversity.
"What we do in this office is raise money to support, providing a guardian ad litem advocate for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected and are in the dependency system," said Voices For Children Chief Operating Officer Tania Rodriguez.
Rodriguez secures funding to support Miami-Dade County’s Guardian Ad Litem program, which recruits, trains and supervises adults to represent a child in court.
"It's very easy,” said Rodriguez. “You just have to have a little bit of time and a whole lot of desire to want to effect change."
Since its birth 25 years ago, Voices For Children has seen a lot of change, for the better.
"In total, we've presented 25,000 children and that's just in Miami-Dade County," said Rodriguez.
"Another huge milestone for us is that in December 2008, the Guardian Ad Litem program reached 100-percent representation, which has been our ultimate mission," added Rodriguez.
It’s a huge mission accomplished, considering there are more than 4,000 kids in Miami-Dade County who've been abandoned, neglected or abused.
Twenty-year-old Allianny Sorge was one of them, before her guardian, Ana Delmarmol, helped pave the way for her adoption five years ago.
"It made it a lot easier actually because I had someone who was there for me," said Sorge.
Voices For Children is looking for many more “someones” who'd like to be part of changing a child's life forever.
"There's infinite ways that anybody in the community who cares about children and who wants a better future for them, they can get involved," said Rodriguez.
Voices For Children still needs sponsors for its 25th anniversary gala taking place Feb. 14. For more information, call the foundation at 305-324-5678 ext. 17 or visit its Web site at
