In sunny South Florida, about a block or so away from the beautiful beaches, the transportation of choice often has two wheels and handle bars.
There are cyclists all over the place. Manny Carbon is one of them. But his reasoning is a little different than most. He rides a bike because he has no other option.
"You're legally blind?" asked Local 10’s Sasha Andrade.
"Yeah, that's why I'm riding a bike -- because I can't drive a car anymore," Carbon said. So, when he heard that criminals were targeting bikes in Surfside, he was understandably upset.
"You don't take something that doesn't belong to you," he said.
The Surfside Police Department said thieves are taking bikes from homes and businesses. Some are locked, others are not. A couple of area scooters were also reporter stolen.
Police are warning residents about what the bad guys are doing.
"They change the color of the bike, or they just take it to a totally different area," said Detective Frank Colonna.
The Surfside Police Department is also hosting a bike safety event April 17 at the 96th Street park at 3:30 p.m. The idea is to teach people what they need to do to help stop the rash of thefts.
