Teen Killed Outside Broward School

Authorities are searching for four men after a teenager was fatally shot during a robbery near Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes early Saturday morning.

Broward sheriff's deputies said 16-year-old Gregory Smith and three friends were waiting for a ride home from a talent show at the school when four men robbed them. Deputies said one of the gunmen was in a Mustang and the rest were on foot.

Authorities said Smith and his friends handed over their valuables, but one of the robbers shot and killed Smith, even though he gave into their demands.

Smith was a freshman honor roll student at the school. An aspiring musical artist, he played the trumpet and rapped.

Boyd Anderson High School is on spring break this week, but Smith's friends, family members and teachers met with deputies and Crime Stoppers representatives to speak to the public, trying to find out information that will lead to the robbers, Local 10's Sasha Andrade reported.

A friend said he is still shocked at the death of Smith, whom he described as a nice, laid-back guy with a lot of talent.

"Real good kid, always listened to the teacher. I don't see how anybody wanted to shoot this kid," the friend said.

Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are searching for four black men in their late teens to early 20s. The driver of the Mustang is described as being heavy-set. Of the three gunmen, one has a dark complexion, wears prescription glasses, has short dreadlocks or twisties and a thin build. Another has light complexion and a short Afro. All four men were wearing bandanas, police said.

The Mustang is said to be dark blue or dark green, mid-1990s to early 2000 model, hard top, with the word “Mustang” written on the vehicle.

Concerned members of the community went door to door Monday to help investigators in their search for the killer.

Counselors will be available for students at Boyd H. Anderson High School next Monday when it reconvenes after spring break.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-439-TIPS (8477).
