Preventing Crime Starts At School

Students Make Pledge To Reduce Crime

Miami Jackson Senior High School has made a pledge this year to help reduce area crime.

"Drugs being sold around the school -- you want to get that to stop?" asked Local 10's Sasha Andrade.

"Yes," replied a senior.

"Lately, drugs seem to be the problem in the Allapattah community. We want to unite with the police, the media," said Ana Flores, who teaches freshmen.

Students are pairing up with police to make a difference in and out of the classroom. Together, they are challenging mindsets. They are throwing out terms like "snitching" and changing them to words like "helping" or "reporting."

The idea is to encourage young people to be a part of the solution.
